The goal of the course “VOLCANIC HAZARD AND RISK ASSESSMENT“ is to introduce the principles of volcanic hazard analysis and the impact on society. The program includes the knowledge of the probabilistic approach to volcanic hazard (PVHA) and eruption forecasting at different time scales (days/weeks to years/decades); basic components of physical modeling of the impact of volcanic eruptions (lava flows, ash dispersal, pyroclastic flows, gas emissions, volcano lakes, mud flows, tsunamis). The conditional PVHA: Eruption scenarios. Effects of eruptions on the health and the environment. The alert levels and their strength and weaknesses. The volcanic risk and the role of scientists in risk mitigation.
The students will acquire the ability to use and implementing existing software and develop new simple models of volcanic hazards and risk.
