ADVANCED ISOTOPE GEOCHEMISTRY – 6 CFU
Master of Science in VOLCANOLOGY
a.a. 2026/2027 – First semester
Università di Napoli Federico II – Dipartimento di Scienze della Terra, dell'Ambiente e delle Risorse (DiSTAR)
Teacher: Massimo D’Antonio (
The course is focused on radiogenic and stable isotope geochemistry and its applications to various issues related to Volcanology and Igneous Petrology. The course is aimed at providing the students with an in-depth knowledge of isotope geochemistry to be applied to absolute geochronology, petrological issues such as the isotopic evolution of the Earth, the origin and distribution of geochemical heterogeneities of the mantle and the evolution of the continental crust, the petrogenesis of volcanic rocks, the characterization of the source regions of magmas, the closed- and open-system magma evolution processes. The applications to Volcanology include the absolute dating of both effusive and explosive volcanic products, the relationships between eruption dynamics and chemistry of volcanic products, the identification of volcanic sources of distal tephra layers.
Notice: the course will begin on November 3rd. The teacher will meet with interested students on November 2nd at 4.00 PM in his room (fourth floor building L1, room No. 73.
