Course Description
The course aims to deepen the understanding of siliciclastic sedimentary facies, their formative processes and their importance in basin analysis. The students will learn about the formation and evolution of sedimentary basins through the integration of concepts and tools from sub-disciplines such as Earth surface processes, stratigraphy, tectonics, structural geology, burial/thermal history, geo/thermochronology, geodynamics, and subsurface geoscience. Readings and hands-on exercises emphasize integration of observational data/measurements with an understanding of fundamental processes.
NOTE: (To attend this course, students should have attended introductory Sedimentary Geology Classes).
Learning Goals:
By the end of the semester, students will be able to:
- Explain how sedimentary basins form and evolve within a plate tectonic framework
- Characterize stratigraphic successions within the context of source-to-sink concepts
- Reconstruct tectonic processes and evolution using basin analysis techniques
- Document the burial history of sedimentary rocks via integrated analysis including stratigraphy, petrography, geo/thermochronology of detrital minerals, and thermal history
