- adsorption/desorption, transport, and photochemical and biological processes of contaminants
- conceptualisation and analysis of complex organics and inorganics soil-surface-groundwater interactions;
- application of modern water and soil remediation technologies for the containment of the pollution of water and sediments by gasoline, BTEX and PCBs spills. Set up of new technologies for remediation of soil polluted by persistent organic contaminants using Fenton-type systems, chemical reductive/oxidative treatments as zero-valent iron alone or in combination with H2O2 or biotic treatments and of oxygen releasing compounds to enhance in situ aerobic microbial degradation at both laboratory and pilot scale level.
- development of pilot scale devices for preparation, treatment and dewatering of organic-polluted soil. Proposition of the application of the electrochemical peroxidation process for the removal of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and metals and metalloids as As in contaminated water system
- re-discussion and definition and thresholds of the clean up goals for the definition of improved rules of contaminant management.
- proposition of the re-use of agricultural biomass as soil amendments or tools for removal of toxic metals in waste waters.
- minimization of the wastewater volume and reduce the production of poor quality effluent; treatment and disposal of wastewaters.
- exploration the toxicity of wastewater, development of bioassays, exploration of on-line ‘real time’ monitoring of wastewater and development of useful BOD to COD and other measures of organic matter concentration relationships. These developments helped managers to better understand the wastewater and manage it more effectively.
