The Physical Volcanology Group is devoted to the physics of volcanic behavior. Our group concentrates on explosive eruptions and their products and on the definition of the deep structures through shear wave velocities. In the last 25 years we have investigated about calderas formation, eruptive mechanisms of strombolian, subplinian, plinian and phreatoplinian eruptions, proximal lithic breccia, transport and emplacement processes of pyroclastic currents. The effects of explosive eruptions on urban settlementshas been evaluated. These researches were performed applying a typical volcanological approach developed, with several archaeological teams, to evaluate the damages of the products of the main historical  Vesuvius  explosive eruptions (79 AD, 472 AD, 512 AD, 1944) on the territory around the volcano. Our new data allow us to reconstruct the sequence of events occurred at Pompeii (during the 79 AD eruption) and in some other sites on the northern slope of Somma-Vesuvius (Augustus’ villa at Somma Vesuviana and Roman Thermae at Pollena Trocchia).  We have disseminated the results of these scientific investigations throughout international conferences and exhibitions. Furthermore, we have collaborated on documentary films produced by RAI, ARTE channel, National Geographic, CBS.
