Main research themes of the Engineering Geology group:
1)  landslide hazard and risk analysis (study areas: southern Apennines, Calabria, Sicilia), at both district and detailed scale, with GIS applications;
2)  shallow landslide susceptibility analysis, at both district and detailed scale, in volcaniclastic soil-mantled slopes of Campania, as related to GIS assessment of morphological-morphometric and geological controlling factors;
3)  characterization of residual soils and weathering processes in crystalline rock masses of Calabria and of the related geomorphological and engineering-geological implications;
4)  analysis and interpretation of ground deformations (due to landslides, subsidence, sinkholes) through conventional and innovative (remote sensing) techniques;
5)  analysis of causes, effects and processes of degradation of stone materials used in past and current construction industry;
6)  engineering-geological characterization of rock masses and rock slope landslide susceptibility assessments;
7)  analysis of triggering mechanisms of shallow and deep-seated landslides through reconstruction of engineering-geological models;
8)  analysis of rainfall sequences triggering shallow landslides by means of empirical and physically-based models;
9)  hydrological monitoring of surficial deposits to study hillslope hydrological processes and assess predisposing and triggering conditions to landsliding;
10)  seismic characterization of the structurally complex formations outcropping in the Southern Apennine chain;
11)  development of engineering-geological models for seismic vulnerability assessment of critical infrastructures;
12)  application of Infrared Termography to remote surveying of fractured rock masses;
13)  groundwater flow and transport modelling in porous and fractured media;
14)  assessment of groundwater compositional and environmental indexes in complex aquifer systems and implementation of geostatistical techniques;
15)  aquifer vulnerability and groundwater pollution risk assessment by GIS modelling;
16)  hydrogeochemical and hydrogeological characterization of thermal and mineral groundwater resources in karst and volcanic aquifers;
17)  climate change impact on groundwater recharge of karst aquifers in southern Apennines;
18)  characterization, management and remediation of polluted aquifers by multidisciplinary approaches;
19)  modelling of infiltration-recharge processes in karst aquifers of southern Italy at different spatial and temporal scales;
20)  analysis of saltwater intrusion in coastal aquifers and development of procedures for the sustainable management of groundwater resources;
21)  development of hydrogeological conceptual models, analytical methodologies and sampling procedures in contaminated sites;
22)  fluctuations of groundwater levels in urban areas and analyses of their impact through conventional and innovative (remote sensing) techniques.
Such studies are usually carried out within a multidisciplinary context, integrating different approaches, such as: qualitative and quantitative GIS assessment of geomorphological and morphometric factors; reconstruction of Digital Elevation Models; photo-interpretation and photogrammetry; engineering-geological and hydrogeological surveying; laboratory and field testing and interpretation; design, installation and control of field soil hydrological monitoring stations; field-based and remote-sensing measurements. For the hydrogeological researches, the following experimental methodologies are commonly applied: field monitoring of piezometric levels and spring discharges; hydrochemical, isotopic, microbiological and hydrogeophysical measurements; hydraulic and hydrodynamic characterization of aquifers; conceptual hydrogeological modeling and cartography, from regional to local scale . 
Landslide susceptibility/hazard and risk assessment cartography, obtained by means of heuristical, statistical and physically-based methods, together with hydrogeological cartography, can be evidenced among the main products deriving from the group’s research activities.
