LIST of SERVICES
The DiSTAR laboratory named “Mineralogy and Petrology Laboratory - Petrophysical characterization of ornamental stone and materials diagnostic” was set up using the equipments and instruments acquired with funding from INNOVA CRdC; those implemented the equipments already at the Department. The Laboratory is a structure able to offer to a very wide audience (Engineer, producers, other laboratories, final users, professional geologists) the opportunity to obtain a complete characterization of ornamental stone and geological materials.

 XRPD diffraction

High resolution powder X ray diffraction, qualitative and quantitative analysis (XRPD)
The laboratory has two powder diffractometers: 1) Philips PW3710/1730 theta/2theta double goniometric unit  and dual detector; 2) PANalytical X'Pert Pro theta/ theta with sample changer (45 position), equipped with fast RTMS X'Celerator detector

FT-IR spectrophotometry
FT-IR analysis for the identification of mineral species, solid solutions, chemical substitutions, etc. Analysis of archaeological materials (pigments), determination of the presence of asbestos and analysis of MCA (Materials containing asbestos).
 
FT-IR spectrophotometer Thermo Nicolet 5700 with microscope Continuum
The Nicolet 5700 FT-IR spectrometer has the power to handle both research and routine analysis experiments. The Thermo Scientific Nicolet 5700 spectrometer sets the standard for high performance and provides a wide variety of sampling options, making it a powerful component of any laboratory. The Nicolet 5700 contains extensive internal controls and diagnostics, controlling filter, polarizers and mirrors for specific applications through the Omnic software suite. The Nicolet 5700 can perform time-based studies, rapid scans and low-light level measurements by proper selection of components.

Porosimetry by Hg intrusion (MIP)
Analysis by mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) of geological materials with Thermo Pascal 140, 240 and 440 equipments
The Pascal 140, 240 and 440 porosimeters are automated tools for the measurement of porosity with dimensions ranging respectively from 0.05 to 10 microns (micropores analysis) and between 2 to 100 microns (macropores analysis); the instrument can be  equipped with an optional add-on kit that allows to evaluate pore sizes ranging from 100 to 300 microns (ultra-macropores analysis).

They provide various information on the porosimetric features  of the analyzed samples: % porosity, porosity type (open, closed, interconnected), pore shape. statistical information such as the size distribution percentage of pores and the mean radius are also available

Porosity of geological materials
He pycnometer (Micromeritics)
The He pycnometer allows accurate determination of the real (or absolute) density of powders and solids. The use of helium, as measurement media, ensures high accuracy, given the small size of the atom that can penetrate into pores and interstices of 0.25 nm size diameter. The determination is carried out quickly and automatically, and provides an accuracies (g/cm3) to the third decimal place. The instrument include three sample holder for different volumes of sample: up to 10, 50 and 135 cm3
Furthermore it is possible to perform multiple analyzes (multiple cycles), to obtain data able to be statistically processed.
